Sad news from Mothers’ Union in Lui

This morning I was informed by Lillian Clement that a dear friend Joana had died in her sleep.  Joana apparently did not show any signs of illness and died during the night alone in her family’s compound.  Her family found her dead in her tukel early in the morning.

I first met Joana in 2011 on my 2nd trip to Lui, South Sudan and again in 2013 when I taught reading and language classes to the Mothers’ Union.

Joana had very little formal education but worked hard in class and greeted me with a big smile and a firm but loving handshake. We became friends and I would give her some extra attention that she needed in learning beginning skills.

When I walked through the market Joana would tell everybody that her friend from Missouri had come to visit her.

Joana was active in Mothers’ Union and worked at Lui Market with her family. Lillian wrote, “this is sad news for Mothers’ Union in Lui” and to her family.  Joana will be buried this evening in Lui, South Sudan.

Rest in peace my dear friend Joana!

How well I remember Joana, and I was greatly saddened by the news of her death. On my first trip to Lui in 2012, Joana was always eager to absorb and participate in all activities. In 2013 Joana was ever present in Evelyn's English classes. Joana's radiant smile and ready laugh were a joy to all of us and true reflections of God's love.

I remember her--always smiling--very involved in MU.  May she rest in peace and rise in glory.  Will sit by my outdoor fireplace tonight and try to hear the drumming, wailing, and singing that is probably going on right now half a world away.
